Umami Popcorn

Great for movie night!

Umami Popcorn

One thing I cannot resist when I walk into a movie theatre is popcorn. Once I smell it I have to have it. But movie popcorn is cooked in large amounts of who-knows-what kind of oil and loaded with salt. Those times I have indulged I couldn’t remove my rings the next day – a sign of too much sodium. This popcorn is SO satisfying and takes no time to make. Load up a ziplock with it and sneak it into the theater – you will be so glad you did!

Umami Popcorn

recipe from Lisa Rice's Kitchen Plantastic

Ingredients

1/2 cup (or more) popcorn kernels

spray bottle of Bragg’s liquid aminos

nutritional yeast

garlic granules

variation: instead of the garlic try Trader Joe’s Green Goddess seasoning – yum!

Instructions

Air pop your popcorn

You can do this in a dry pan with a lid that has a vent, but I recommend having your own air popper. I have this one. You will make your money back in no time on the savings from making your own instead of buying it at the theater!

Once all your kernels have popped, add your popcorn to a wide bowl and lightly spritz it with the Bragg’s while tossing or stirring in the bowl. Then sprinkle with nutritional yeast and garlic and/or other seasonings. The Bragg’s helps the seasonings stick to the popcorn and also adds a salty flavor. Careful – do not overdo the Braggs or your popcorn will lose its crunch! Store your popcorn in a large Ziplock bag so you have a grab-n-go for movie night!

*if you don’t want to carry a bag into the theater in order to sneak your popcorn in, and if anyone asks, you can always say you are allergic to oils. But as long as you order something else – like a bottle of water – they will often turn a blind eye. Here in Austin we are lucky to have the Alamo Drafthouse Theater which serves food and drinks at your seat. They don’t allow outside food, so when I bring my popcorn I usually order some hibiscus iced tea or sparkling water.
